Caterham by Norman Skinner PDF Print E-mail

The cedar tree in the High Street, Caterham.

With one part up and one part down,
That is the shape of Caterham Town,
Where e'er they went,
Jack and his Jill,
They found they had to climb a hill.

Both man and beast would heave and strain,
To pull a load up Waller Lane,
The summit reached,
they'd made the grade,
They sprawled beneath the cedar's shade.

Then in Queen Victoria's reign,
Into the Valley came the train,
But for a time folks still relied,
On horse and cab to complete their ride.

Then came the petrol motor car,
The roads were smoothed and covered with tar,
All was changed,
or seemed to be,
Except for Caterham's cedar tree.

So, in your busy lives today,
Mark my words,
hear what I say,
Bad luck will follow he or she,
Who harms the Caterham cedar tree!
