Philip Brabazon of Purley Bury presents the cup to John Gilbert of Caterham. The Caterham and Purley Bury croquet teams met at Queen's Park, Caterhamon- the-Hill on Saturday 10th September for their annual fixture to contest the Downlands Cup. This is now the third year running that the local rivals have competed for the diminutive silver claret jug and it was Caterham's turn to play host.

The teams were rewarded with fine weather and enjoyed a mixture of golf and association croquet doubles allowing 20 players at a time to play on the two courts. The honours were shared 3-3 in the association croquet but Caterham dominated the golf croquet 11-1 to win back the trophy that has been won by the home team on every occasion to date.

A fine lunch and tea, provided jointly by the clubs, was enjoyed by all and everyone looked forward to next year's encounter at Purley Bury.
