At this time of the year, when sitting in mid table, you can either get sucked into the relegation scrap or move towards the play-offs, and with seven matches between 23rd February and 16th March there were plenty of points on offer.

Things started brightly with a 5-2 win over local rivals Merstham. A pulsating first half saw the game swing one way and then another. Leafe took an early lead before Merstham hit back to go 2-1 up. Debutant Josh Smith then ran Merstham ragged and set up two goals which saw Leafe go into the break 3-2 up. He continued this form into the second half and set up Leafe's fourth before McCann chipped the keeper for a fifth. So hopes were high going into the next game at home to promotion chasing Worthing, but the hope was quickly dashed as the Leafe defence crumpled and conceded four poor first half goals. They tightened things up in the second half but the damage had been done and Worthing ran out comfortable 4-1 winners. Next up was a long midweek trip to Eastbourne but it proved a successful one, as Watson scored the only goal of the game in the final minute to steal the three points. Two consecutive 2-1 defeats followed, away to Chatham and then home to Leatherhead before Leafe hit their stride again and registered two thumping home wins, 3-1 over Walton and Hersham and then 4-1 against Whitstable Town.

So the inconsistency that has characterised the season remained, and whilst the results mean that playoff hopes are now all but over, there must be satisfaction that enough points have now been gained to move well clear of relegation.

The aim must now be to push on for a top ten finish, which would be a fine achievement.
