About a dozen visitors to Caterham Bowling Club in Queen's Park Road, Caterham- on-the-Hill received a basic introduction to the game of lawn bowls on Saturday 15th May, many of whom said they would like to go along again.
The club has decided to hold a second open day between 10am and 1pm on Saturday 19th June to provide anybody interested with another chance to try bowls. It is a very sociable game and all visitors will receive a warm welcome. Wear any clothes that you find are comfortable whilst flat soled shoes will be helpful. One of the club's lady members, Jean Hewett, is this year's President of the Surrey County Women's Association, which means this season will see Jean travelling all over the country.
"I have to go to every county in the country and play in all the county matches," said Jean. I am looking forward to August because the national finals are taking place in Leamington so my husband Michael and I will be spending a fortnight there. It is a lovely ground."
Jean is passionate about the game which she has been playing since 1977. "Michael joined the club in 1976 and because he played so much I thought I would give it a try and I ended up playing more than he did!" said Jean.
"Our green opens at 2pm but I would like to see games played between 10am and 2pm to attract the young mums. Everybody thinks of bowls as an old people's game but the youngsters do exceptionally well."
For those who would like to try lessons, the club's four qualified coaches are able to offer six free lessons on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons so there is nothing to lose financially. If you would like any further information you can telephone Michael Miller on 01883 622305 or Jean Mann on 01883 347172.
Jean Hewett features in this month's 'In the Spotlight'. Click here to read.
