FOOD HYGIENE STUDENTS PASS WITH FLYING COLOURS
All 20 students who recently attended a Chartered Institute of Environmental Health accredited Food Hygiene course have passed with flying colours. The Food Safety in Catering (Level Two) one day course teaches food handlers about basic good hygiene practice and is run by Tandridge District Council’s Environmental Health Team. Knights Garden Centre, The Pantry, Chelsham, is one local business that has found the course invaluable. This has been recognised by the Gold award it has received in the Eat Out Eat Well Awards, which is given to caterers who make it easier for customers to make healthy choices when eating out. Businesses are assessed by Surrey County Council Trading Standards, in partnership with Environmental Health, on levels of fruit and vegetables, salt, cooking methods, children's meals, promotion of healthy food, staff training and other areas. Councillor Tony Elias, Chairman of the Community Services Committee, said: “We not only have to enforce food safety, but have a key role in encouraging and supporting businesses to help them meet standards. Providing this low cost course contributes to this. We have seen distinct improvements in the standard of food safety management in the businesses attending our courses.”
