Over 1200 school children from the Tandridge and Reigate & Banstead areas will learn vital safety lessons when they attend the Junior Citizen event from Monday 4th to Friday 15th October. The event, being held at the TS Arc Royal in Redhill, is funded by the Community Safety Partnerships from Tandridge and Reigate & Banstead Councils.

Junior Citizen is aimed at youngsters aged between 10 and 11 who learn about issues including railway safety, first aid, electricity, drug dangers, road safety, fire hazards, safe use of the internet, the adverse effects of anti-social behaviour and responsible use of the countryside.

During the day the children will visit ten separate workstations, each showing how to deal with simulated situations involving everyday dangers. At the end of the session each child is given activity sheets for follow up work at school, along with keepsakes to remind them of the day and the messages they learn.

Junior Citizen is a unique partnership event between Tandridge District Council, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, Surrey Police, Surrey Fire & Rescue Service and representatives and resources from the School Nurses, Raven Housing Trust, EDF Energy, Surrey County Council Countryside Management, and South East Coast Ambulance.

Hilary New, Community Safety Manager for Tandridge District Council, said: “This is a very positive event giving key messages to children who are just about to go to secondary school and starting to become more independent. The children can feel more confident in dealing with a range of situations."
